Lesson Plans: Science

Special Education Science Curriculum

Each science lesson begins by teaching core science vocabulary specific to the theme of the unit in the Understanding Big Ideas segment. To expand on the target vocabulary, teachers are provided with an explicit script on how to build science concepts with strategies like example and non-example instruction.

Students apply their knowledge of the science concepts and skills addressed in the Applying What We Know segment. Through a hands-on activity, experiment, or project students gain practical experience with the target concepts, to work collaboratively, and to demonstrate that knowledge to others in their grade level.

Special education teachers are provided a Science Newsletter to help guide instruction and promote language and reading comprehension skills. In the Making Connections Segment, teachers use the newsletter and subsequent multiple choice questions to deepen understanding and teach comprehension using model-lead-test with a system of least prompts.
